Paintings > POSTCARDS FROM THE ABSTRACT(ED) UNIVERSE
"POSTCARDS FROM THE ABSTRACT UNIVERSE" is a multidimensional project by Serbian artist Sandra Vucicevic, supported by a 2023 Flushing Town Hall Grant. It reveals the artist’s unique vision of Queens, as she transforms photographs of landmarks of this part of the city, such as the Unisphere and Flushing Meadows Park, into colorful and dynamic abstract compositions.
This project was made in collaboration with local photographers who captured the essence of Queens landmarks. Sandra transforms their images into colorful and expressive abstractions that challenge the perception of reality. What secrets lie behind the familiar scenes? What dreams and fantasies emerge from the shapes and colors? How does the abstract(ed) Universe connect with our own?
The exhibition features the original photographs next to the paintings they inspired, creating a dialogue between realism and abstraction. Additionally, visitors can experience the animated version of these paintings in Augmented Reality, adding another layer of immersion and interaction.
Sandra Vucicevic's artistic practice is driven by her fascination with the ambiguous nature of reality, and her exploration of the hidden dimensions of the familiar. She questions the boundaries between the Known and the imaginary and challenges the viewers to look beyond the surface of things. Her paintings are expressive and energetic, using bold colors and shapes to evoke emotions and sensations.
*This project is supported by funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, Statewide Community Regrants Program (formerly the Decentralization program) with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature and administered by Flushing Town Hall.
